About the collections

In recent years volunteers at St. Ives Archive have been engaged in a wide range of fishing related subjects which now provide a wealth of information and a very clear picture of the rise and eventual demise of the industry in the town.

Extensive files are available for research purposes on subject as diverse as:

  • The two lifeboat disasters
  • Minutes from the Friendship Fishing Company
  • The former Custom House
  • The harbour
  • Porthmeor Beach
  • Fishing boat registration numbers through the years
  • General fishing
  • Boat building
  • Shipwrecks
  • The wreck of the Alba
  • The grounding of HMS Wave
  • A shipping timeline
  • The Torrey Canyon
  • The Hain Steamship Company

Further information is available on personalities who worked in the fishing industry, often dating back through many generations. There is detailed information about many of the well-established fishing boats who were a common sight in St. Ives.

As well as written records and thousands of photographs there is a selection of DVDs about St. Ives sourced from both amateur film makers in the town (some go back to the 1930s) as well as a number of documentaries which were made for television over the years.
